First, the resulting rolls were too soft and unable to withstand the environment of truck and container shipment. As a result, the rolls would arrive at the retailer in oblong shapes, and the store clerk would need to take precious time to reshape them.

However, the biggest challenge has been the inefficiency of these manufacturing methods. This inefficiency eliminates any cost savings provided by the coreless design. In fact, manufacturers found that it cost more to make these coreless rolls than cored ones.

To make cored rolls, a machine shaft spins and wraps the paper around a plastic or cardboard core. But with the development of converting machines, rolls can now be produced without this core. Today’s thermal printers also no longer need a central axis to feed the paper, rendering the core useless.
