Label Stock

Label converting equipment is crucial to producing the label stock used in various industries, including retail, healthcare, and logistics. From barcodes, to shipping labels, to product labels, each application requires rolls of different types of label material in specific widths.

Specialized slitter/rewinder machines are designed to maintain smooth operation and high-quality output by cutting, winding, and preparing these to precise specifications. This “behind the scenes” machinery is the key to efficient production lines and the diverse needs of the label industry.

What are Label Stock Slitters/Rewinder Machines?

Paper slitter/rewinder machines can be used to cut large master rolls of blank linered or linerless label stock into narrower rolls that can be used to print barcodes, tracking labels, food or product packaging labels, and more.

Slitting and rewinding is a three-step process. First, the larger roll is unwound and the material is fed into the cutting area of the machine. Then, the material is slit lengthwise into multiple rolls of the desired width. Finally, each new strip is rewound onto a core to create multiple smaller rolls of label stock.

To ensure smooth feeding and material transfer, the cores sit between a set of bedrollers to keep them aligned, and the label stock is cut with an automated system of shear, score, or razor knives. Ends are securely adhered to cores, and a top rider roller applies precise pressure to the rolls as they are rewound to ensure the finished rolls are the correct firmness.

Key Features and Benefits of Jennerjahn’s Top-Tier Label Stock Slitter/Rewinder Machines

Slitter/rewinder machines from Jennerjahn Machine can be used with linered and linerless label stock in various widths.

JJF: Fully Automatic Surface Rewinder

The JJF Automatic Surface Rewinder is a fully automated model requires very little operator labor. It features PLC technology and an intuitive touchscreen HMI, “recipe” and diagnostic screens for easy operation and troubleshooting, automatic speed calculations, and core alignment for accurate slitting and minimal core offset. Cores are automatically fed into a sorting unit for alignment, staging, and insertion into the rewinding station. Tails are cut, wrapped, and tucked around the cores. After rolls are wound to the desired length, the ends are sealed and the rolls are transferred to an exit conveyor.

JJS: Semi-Automatic Surface Rewinder

The JJS model requires an operator to load mandrels with a master roll to begin each cycle. The JJS features automatic mandrel insertion, tail cutting, gluing, finished roll kick-out, and mandrel cap removal. The top rider roller and two bedrollers apply regulated down pressure and programmable torque to control roll hardness and tension.

JJM: Manual Surface Rewinder

The JJM manual model is easy to set up and operate, and is an ideal choice for lower-volume converting. It incorporates a rewind station and shafted unwind stand into the mono-frame design. This machine reaches web speeds up to 1800 fpm. As an option, manual tail cutting and gluing can be upgraded to automate these operations.

Operation involves several manual steps per cycle, including:

  • Removing finished rolls from the rewinder
  • Placing a cored mandrel into the rewinder
  • Cutting and securing the tails of the finished rolls with an adhesive tab or glue
  • Removing finished rolls from the mandrel
  • Reloading the mandrel and new cores to prepare for the next cycle

DJJF: Dual Fully Automatic Surface Rewinder

The DJJF high-volume model handles two master rolls at once, with a single hopper and distribution system for cores. After slitting, a core diverter monitors each rewinder, and the automated roll removal system feeds finished rolls into one exit conveyor.

The DJJF can double production capacity, and significantly reduces labor requirements and production footprint.

Key Features of Label Stock Paper Packaging Solutions

JCP: Jennerjahn Case Packer

The JCP Jennerjahn case packer can pack shrink-wrapped or individual rolls of labels.

RPL: Roll Processing Line Separator & Pounder Sleeve Wrapper with Heat Tunnel

The RPL Separator & Pound Sleeve Wrapper solves the common problem of core offset by collecting finished rolls from the rewinder, orienting them with cores in a vertical position, and realigning the cores properly with a small press. Aligned rolls are then sent downstream for packaging.

FB550: Sleeve Wrapper with Heat Tunnel

The FB550 Sleeve Wrapper system features rapid packaging capabilities, processing one to 25 rolls per pack. Each pack can contain up to five rolls per row in an arrangement of one to five rows.

Markets that Use Label Stock

The linered label industry is experiencing significant growth due to the rising demand for shipping and barcoding labels in the rapidly expanding e-commerce and logistics sectors. This growth is further fueled by the cost-effectiveness and efficiency of these labels, which eliminate the need for ink or ribbons and produce high-quality prints quickly. Additionally, their versatility across multiple industries, including retail, healthcare, and transportation, makes them an increasingly popular choice, driving further expansion in the market.

Some common end-use applications include:

Shipping and Logistics:

  • Shipping Labels. Used for printing addresses and barcodes for packages.
  • Tracking Labels. Applied to pallets and shipments for tracking purposes.

Retail:

  • Price Tags. Printed on demand for pricing items in stores.
  • Receipts. Used in point-of-sale (POS) systems to provide customers with transaction records.

Healthcare:

  • Prescription Labels. Attached to medication bottles and packages.
  • Patient Identification. Used for wristbands and other identification purposes in hospitals.

Food and Beverage:

  • Food Packaging. Labels for fresh produce, meat, and other perishable goods.
  • Nutritional Information. Labels providing nutritional details and ingredients.

Manufacturing:

  • Product Identification. Used for labeling parts and products during the manufacturing process.
  • Inventory Management. Labels for organizing and tracking inventory in warehouses.

Postal Services:

  • Postage Labels. Used for printing postage information directly on mail packages.

Event Management:

  • Tickets and Passes. Printed for events, concerts, and exhibitions.

These applications take advantage of the quick, reliable, and high-quality printing capabilities of linered label stock rolls, making them a versatile solution across various industries.
