How Our Automatic Core Plugging Machine Works
Minimal Operator Responsibility
To begin, the operator pours 2 or 3-inch core plugs into the hopper. From there, a cleated elevated conveyor carries the plugs up, and they are transferred into a centrifugal bowl feeder where they are automatically oriented and aligned.
The operator is also responsible for loading the cores into the system. Depending on the size of the core, the dividers can be adjusted to suit core widths ranging from 12 to 72 inches.
Automated Plugging System
Our Automatic Core Plugging Machine features a 2-level conveyor system: the lower conveyor stages the cores and the upper conveyor stages the core plugs. When the core plugs leave the bowl feeder, their orientation is verified. Using compressed air, any improperly oriented core plugs are rejected from the conveyor and directed into a box.
Two plug feeding stations automatically push the properly oriented plugs off the conveyor and into corresponding vertical accumulation magazines, where they are accurately staged vertically in the nest. Meanwhile, cores leave the core hopper onto the bottom core staging conveyor and are automatically pushed off the conveyor into the core plugging station.
Pneumatic hold-down clamps hold the core in place while two core plugs are placed into the core ends. Next, the core is ejected from the machine into a bin on casters that can be easily rolled to the machine for processing. Alternatively, the plugged rolls can be ejected onto the infeed conveyor of a rewinder. The Automatic Core Plugging System can continue to operate in a fully automatic mode as long as the plug and core hopper remain filled.
About Automated Core Plugging
This robot is equipped with special end-of-arm tooling to pick a plug from the nest and insert the plug into the end of the core. The robot returns to the nest to pick up the 2nd plug and insert it into the opposite end of the finished roll. A secondary case-loading robot is used in conjunction with the first robot to plug and load the roll into a box.
